The Rock Guy strives to produce unique, high-quality artistic and decorative pieces hand-fashioned for the home or garden. Its innovative method and distinctive concept ensure the delight and satisfaction of its clients. Rock sculpting is a craftsmanship not practiced anywhere else in Ontario. The nearest competitors are located in the United States & Western Canada; however, rock sculpting is a form of art-décor and various types of art crafts exist. Although these are not direct competitors, all crafts workers compete for the same market share. In the French River area, a number of crafters offer various products for sale to local consumers and tourists:
Rock sculpting has an advantage over its competitors: it is new & unique. Homeowners and decorators are always looking for interesting and innovative ways to adorn their homes and gardens. As the sculptors are individually designed, crafted & numbered, clients will not find two items alike. This is quite appealing to many customers who strive to create beautiful homes. As the sole employee of The Rock Guy, I will be charged with visiting rock pits to select, order & purchase appropriate materials; I will negotiate with sandpit owners to obtain various locations at which I may practice & produce my art; I will design & make the product; I will approach retailers and present them with sample pieces, I will attend arts & crafts shows & conventions in Sudbury & Toronto to gain exposure for my product; and I will invoice clients & receive payments. Throughout my career, I have built upon my post-secondary education with furniture woodworking & finishing by working extensively as an industrial painter, a sandblaster, & a carpenter. While I particularly enjoy putting my accurate finishing skills to use, I am equally comfortable providing clients with cost estimates or determining the quantities of materials required for any given project. At RDH, my qualifications were acknowledged as I full filled the role of Lead Hand for three years.
